What is Diabetes ?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 29 million people in the United States have diabetes today. It is also believed that currently there are 8.1 million individuals that have not been diagnosed yet. In diabetes, the pancreas fails to produce insulin and/or the body’s cells are insulin resistant. There are two types of diabetes.
Type I Diabetes.
In type I diabetes the body's immune system attacks the beta cells of the pancreas causing local inflammation and irreversible damage. As a result, the body cannot produce sufficient insulin for the uptake of glucose by the cells.
Type II Diabetes.
In type II diabetes, the body's cells gradually become insulin resistant and the beta cells of the pancreas decline in insulin production due to the presence of chronic systemic inflammation.
SYMPTOMS.
Causes:
Today, those who suffer with diabetes are typically prescribed insulin and/or thiazolidinediones to reduce blood glucose levels. However, literature on thiazolidinediones have shed light on the serious cardiovascular side effects that come with these drugs. Many have sought other more natural ways to address this issue.
